Comment on The Issue of "Kesan Kebiadaban di Dunia Siber"

I’ve already read a credible and a very alarming article taken from Utusan Malaysia that has written by my stylish lecturer, Dr. Rahmat Ghazali, which the article entitled “Kesan Kebiadaban di Dunia Siber”. Honestly, this article has really pulled me to read it until the end of his written. Believe it or not, I’ve read it almost 5 times and I attracted to the enthusiastic language and many new words (for me) used in the article like “kelewahan” as well as “enteng”.

Do not get confuse with the above opinion. What am I trying to share here is my perspective regarding the issue of immoral behavior that is brought through the cyber. I am extremely agree with the writer’s thought as I think the article gives lot of advantages and create awareness among Malaysian. I believe this impertinent in a cyber world will give bad impact to the community and probably it will bring the country to be in chaos. Teenagers especially will be a group that is easily influenced with the matter discussed of found on the internet. This generation which are in large number of populations always surfing on the net either for the purpose of entertainment or education.

Malaysia today is in line to achieve 2020 Vision, with the country is becoming develop to get attention from all countries all over the world. As we all know, Malaysia is a multi-ethnic country and it is crucial for everyone to work “in a group” and together cooperate to respond with our current Prime Minister’s mission who want to develop “Gagasan 1 Malaysia”. In order to achieve his mission, the issues of libel, slander and defamation should not happened. Cyber is actually a paradox medium which at first can give benefit to everyone, but later can turned to be very bad medium to everyone. Even though through the net people are free to voice out their opinion and feeling, unfortunately this circumstance will rise the fractured of Malaysian Hegemony. This can be happened when everyone are too free to express their feelings, they will “throw it” without thinking wisely and rationally. As a result, other people will get “touch” or “hurt” by their words. Like a Malay said “Mata Pena Adalah Lebih Tajam Daripada Pedang.”

Statistic found by Dr. Rahmat which discussed on the immoral and very bad words through Google search engine had shown the situation is becoming worse. Sadly, the highest rate for this immoral behavior is for “Melayu” + “Babi” which is 703,000. This issue is becoming questionable. Who did it? Are Malays did it? Or other nations did it? I believe no one can forget the incident of 13th May especially for Malays, who had been brutally treated by other nation. I don’t want the incident happened again. But, it is not impossible for it to happen again if the community misuses the internet. In fact, media is actually a medium that can give big or worse problem to everyone. This has proven in the book entitled 13th May: Before and After, by Tunku Abdul Rahman, who said, media is one of the factor that leads to 13th May incident.

“Dengan data penggunaan kata-kata kesat seperti yang dipaparkan, tidak hairanlah jika negara seperti Iran (pada awal Feb 2010) telah mengharamkan enjin carian 'Google'. Pastinya tindakan kerajaan Iran adalah untuk mencegah carian-carian maklumat dan berita yang boleh merosakkan minda masyarakat serta keharmonian negara. Namun kita pasti, itu bukanlah penyelesaian yang berkesan."( Dr Rahmat , 2010)

The above statement taken from Dr. Rahmat’s article make me feel to think deeply about what has actually happened in a cyber world. Again, I would like to agree with him as I believe it is not a good solution for the problem of misusing the Google search engine. In

my own perspective, if the prohibited of Google search engine is implemented in Malaysia, it will lead the country to left far behind as the community cannot search for many useful and current information provided by the Google search engine. So, if this happen, how can the country be in line with other developed countries like America, Japan as well as China? Can we achieve the 2020 Vision?

Example of the inappropriate picture.

Therefore, I would like to suggest for the authority and IT professionals to held the best “sieve” act in Google search engine in order to prevent the negative issues spread broadly in a cyber world. Hopefully, this immatured matters will not be in our mind as it will be such a futile thing to our everyday’s life.

i'm a social science students. i found out that this article really helps. i;m totally agree that technologies do influence our lives and could make a huge differences towards world culture especially in social culture and social structure and institutions. it may change ones belief, behavior and thought. the innovation had lead to social change where people are freely to voice out their ideas and opinion about anything without compromising with others.Personal interest becomes more prior than community interest. social networks and blog are the example of innovation of the invention of internet. it may lead towards conflict and social problems where it is the challenge in achieving good urbanism. but somehow it is undeniable that the innovation had help some people or community to change their faith and life culture towards world perspective. it can change nothing to something. it just depends on us how to manage to use internet wisely. Suruhanjaya Komunikasi and Multimedia should enforce law towards people who misused the internet especially regarding the sensitive issue such as races and religion to avoid racism and conflicts. community also need to learn how to respects when living in multi cultural country like Malaysia. peace :)

Im siti yummy faridatul akmar, MBA student in Uitm. After reading this entry, Im interested to give some comments. I think this issue must be addressed immediately especially among Generation Y. As we know, internet is the fastest and the most cost effective medium for international communication, it is also at a great risk of misuse by many, resulting in several issues like immoral behavior that is brought through the cyber. This is maybe a reason why cyber become a medium for those who want to express their opinion without think twice about the effect. In my opinion, they can convey their opinion, but in a good language and care about the sensitivity of the communities in this country. As a Malaysian, we don’t want to see this issue being the instigator of the country’s Internet blocking. Then, it can bring disrepute to Malaysia in the eyes of other countries and encourage inter-ethnic conflict.
